The Sorrel-Weed House: One of Savannah's Most Haunted Homes

Updated July 2026 ยท 4 min read

Overlooking Madison Square, the Sorrel-Weed House is one of the most famous haunted homes in Savannah โ€” and one of the first houses in Georgia officially recognized for its paranormal activity. Built in the 1840s for shipping magnate Francis Sorrel, the grand mansion is steeped in tragedy.

A House Built on Sorrow

Legend holds that Francis Sorrel's wife, Matilda, took her own life after discovering her husband's affair, and that the other woman later died under mysterious circumstances in the carriage house. Visitors and paranormal investigators report disembodied voices, sudden cold spots, slamming doors, and shadowy figures moving through the rooms. The house has been featured on numerous paranormal television programs.

Investigated for Decades

The Sorrel-Weed House has become a destination for ghost hunters, with some of the most compelling EVP (electronic voice phenomena) recordings in the country reportedly captured within its walls.
