1. The LaLaurie Mansion — New Orleans
Perhaps the most infamous haunted house in America, the LaLaurie Mansion in the French Quarter was home to socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie, whose horrific cruelty was exposed by a fire in 1834. Passersby report screams, apparitions, and an oppressive dread outside its walls to this day.
2. The Sultan's Palace — New Orleans
This French Quarter mansion is home to one of the city's grisliest legends — a tale of a mysterious "sultan," a house of excess, and an entire household found brutally murdered. Residents and visitors report a lingering presence and the scent of incense with no source.
3. The Myrtles Plantation — St. Francisville
Often called one of America's most haunted homes, the Myrtles is said to be built atop a burial ground and home to the ghost of Chloe, an enslaved woman, among others. Its famous mirror is said to trap the spirits of those who died in the house.
4. Bourbon Street's Haunted Bars — New Orleans
The French Quarter's oldest bars are as haunted as they are historic. From Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop — one of the oldest bars in the country, said to be watched over by the pirate Jean Lafitte himself — to countless others, the spirits here are both the drinking and the ghostly kind.
5. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 — New Orleans
The oldest cemetery in New Orleans is the reputed resting place of voodoo queen Marie Laveau, whose tomb still draws visitors seeking her favor. These above-ground "cities of the dead" are among the most atmospheric — and haunted — places in the South.
