Tucked along Cumberland Street, the Powder Magazine is the oldest public building in the Carolinas, completed in 1713. Built to store the colony's gunpowder, its thick walls have witnessed over three centuries of Charleston's turbulent history — from colonial defense to the Revolutionary War.
Centuries of History Under One Roof
Designed so that an explosion would collapse the roof inward rather than destroy the surrounding city, the Powder Magazine survived earthquakes, hurricanes, and wars. With so much history layered into one small structure, it's little wonder visitors sense they're not alone among its ancient walls.
