Tucked between Church and State Streets in Charleston's historic district, Philadelphia Alley is a quiet cobblestone passage with a violent past. Once known as "Dueler's Alley," it was a favored spot for settling matters of honor with pistols — and not everyone walked away.
The Whistling Ghost of Dr. Joseph Ladd
The alley's most famous spirit is Dr. Joseph Brown Ladd, a young physician and poet who was mortally wounded in a duel here in 1786. Ladd was known for his cheerful habit of whistling, and to this day, visitors passing through the alley after dark report hearing a disembodied whistle with no one in sight.

In centuries past, duels were a deadly fixture of Charleston life, and the alley's high walls made it an ideal, secluded spot. The echoes of those gunshots — and the spirits of the men who fell — are said to remain.
