The 6 Most Haunted Places in Texas
Updated July 2026 ยท 8 min read
Everything's bigger in Texas โ including its ghost stories. From frontier violence to Gilded Age tragedy, the Lone Star State has accumulated centuries of hauntings. Here are six of the most haunted places in Texas.
1. The Alamo โ San Antonio
The site of the most famous battle in Texas history is also one of its most haunted. Since the 1836 siege, people have reported spectral defenders still standing guard, phantom figures on the walls, and an unshakable heaviness in the air. The spirits of the Alamo, it seems, never surrendered.
2. Sixth Street & the Servant Girl Annihilator โ Austin
Before Jack the Ripper terrorized London, Austin had its own serial killer. In 1884โ85, the "Servant Girl Annihilator" murdered several people across the city, and the case was never solved. Downtown Austin's haunted bars and the O. Henry House keep these gruesome stories alive.
3. Downtown Dallas
Beneath the high-rises, Dallas hides a past steeped in murder and intrigue. The historic district's theaters, government buildings, and old bars are home to some of the Big D's most sinister spirits.
4. Downtown Houston
Space City's diverse history left behind an equally diverse cast of ghosts โ some of whom, guests report, don't always keep their hands to themselves. The historic bars of Downtown Houston are a hotspot for the frightening phantoms of the wild, wild west.
5. The Driskill Hotel โ Austin
Austin's grand 1886 hotel is famously haunted, from the ghost of its cattle-baron builder to a little girl who chased a ball down a marble staircase to her death. Guests still report her laughter โ and elevators that move on their own.
6. Fort Worth's Stockyards
The old west lives on in Fort Worth, and so do its ghosts. The historic Stockyards district carries stories of gunfighters, outlaws, and saloon spirits who never rode off into the sunset.
