The Marshall House: Savannah's Haunted Civil War Hospital

On Broughton Street in the heart of Savannah's historic district stands the Marshall House, a beautifully restored hotel that first opened in 1851. Its elegant façade hides a grim past: during the Civil War and later yellow fever epidemics, the building served as a hospital — and some of its patients, it seems, never checked out.

Ghosts of the Wounded

The Marshall House operated as a hospital for Union soldiers during General Sherman's occupation of Savannah. Guests over the years have reported the sound of footsteps in empty halls, faucets that turn themselves on, children running in the corridors, and — most chillingly — the apparition of a soldier reaching for limbs he lost on the operating table. During a 20th-century renovation, workers reportedly discovered human bones beneath the floorboards, a haunting confirmation of the building's use as a field hospital.
