Is Bonaventure Cemetery Haunted? Savannah's Most Famous Graveyard

Updated July 2026 ยท 5 min read

Just outside downtown Savannah, beneath a canopy of moss-draped oaks, lies Bonaventure Cemetery โ€” one of the most beautiful and most haunted graveyards in America. Made famous by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Bonaventure draws visitors from around the world, and many leave convinced they were not alone.

The Weeping Ghost of Gracie Watson

The cemetery's most famous resident is little Gracie Watson, a beloved six-year-old who died of pneumonia in 1889. Her grieving parents commissioned a stunningly lifelike statue of her, which still marks her grave. Visitors have long reported hearing a child crying near the statue, and some claim to have seen Gracie herself playing among the headstones. It's said that if you take something from her, she'll weep tears of blood.

A Cemetery Built on a Plantation

Bonaventure sits on the grounds of a former plantation, and its history stretches back centuries. Some visitors report the sound of a phantom dinner party โ€” glasses clinking, guests laughing โ€” an echo, legend says, of a long-ago dinner that continued even as the mansion burned.
